date: on request
Day 1 - Meet in Bangkok.
We will meet you at the airport for the transfer to your hotel.
After a rest we will cruise the river and have dinner in a beautiful restaurant overlooking the city.
Day 2 - Fly to Luang Prabang
There will be a leisurely departure for Luang Prabang - the ancient capital of Laos -- where we will enjoy the tranquil beauty of this mystical city and an introduction to the welcoming culture of Northern Laos.
Day 3 - Luang Prabang
Today is reserved for touring Luang Prabang's ubiquitous temples and important historical sites. The entire town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you will need an entire day to check everything out. Fortunately, Luang Prabang is one of the only towns in Northern Laos where you can call home or send e-mails - so you can do this before we go off the path, M&G style.
Day 4 - Luang Namtha by boa
Today we will travel up the mighty Mekong by both speedboat and Klang - the longtail boat of Southeast Asia, to the smaller and more pristine Namtha River. Few jungle rivers like this are left untouched anywhere on the planet. We'll cruise the Namtha to our destination - a small village that has yet to be hit by the crowds.
Day 5 - Muanggoi by boat and bus
We leave early this morning for a beautiful drive through the jungle to the spectacular village of Muanggoi. This town was heavily bombed by US Forces during the Vietnam War - but that was a long time ago and we believe it is one of the best kept secrets in the Far East. Monggoi is located on the shores of the Nam Ou River -- one of the eight Ho Chi Minh Trails of the Vietnam War.
Day 6 - Cruise to Luang Prabang, fly to Hanoi
Today we'll cruise from Monggoi back to Luang Prabang along one of the most spectacular limestone mountain ranges on the planet. Later we'll fly to Vietnam by way of Vientiane.
Day 7 - Hanoi sightseeing
With it's spectacular French colonial architecture and lovely lakeside parks, Hanoi is a lovely place to spend a few quiet hours. The city has worked hard to regain its prewar elegance - something you'll discover as we meander through town.
Day 8 - Fly from Hanoi to Hué
Hue is an ancient walled city that is still considered the artistic capital of Vietnam. Life is more relaxed here as the citizenry of Hue spend more time appreciating art and food. A lavish meal in one of Hue's best eateries will teach you that art and food is one and the same to the people of Hue.
Day 9 - Hué
Today you can just kick back for more meditative time in Hue or you can join our optional excursion to Khe San, the mountain that saw one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War. This is where General Westmoreland lost control of the war - leading to the eventual process of Vietnamization, the American evacuation and Ho Chi Minh eventual victory. But don't expect a battlefield. The rice paddies have recaptured Khe San!
Day 10 - Hué to Danang by train
This is a spectacular day as we join the local people on a train ride from Hué, through a spectacular track of jungle, and down to Danang's world famous China Beach. We'll arrive just in time for you to enjoy an umbrella garnished beverage on the beach in the clear blue South China Sea.
Day 11 - Fly from Danang to Ho Chi Min City (Saigon)
You'll have plenty of time to kick back on China Beach this morning because we won't leave Danang until the late afternoon on a very short flight to Vietnam's busiest city.
Day 12 - Ho Chi Min sightseeing
With 4 million inhabitants, Ho Chi Minh City is one of the main commercial centres of South-East Asia. We will stroll around the monuments and museums of this colourful city and we will enjoy a special meal in the city's vibrant Chinatown. Stay close to Alessandra here because she plans to buy a year's supply of China's greatest green tea.
Day 13 - Fly from Ho Chi Min to Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Phnom Penh is booming after several years of decay. French colonial buildings are still intact to remind us of this city's distant past. We will experience a deluxe Khmer dinner - a perfect combination between the complex cuisines of ancient Khmer and French.
Day 14 - Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
After a visit to the Royal Palace and the unique Emerald Buddha, we will stop at the colourful "Russian Market". From there, we will hit the road towards Siem Reap and the unforgettable archeological complex of Angkor Wat.
Day 15 - Siem Reap and Angkor Wat
Your very first contact with Angkor Wat must take place at sunrise. We will rise before sunrise, make our way to the main temple in the dark, wait for the shadows to disappear --- and then you will have the best taste of this magic temple. Returning to our hotel for breakfast, the rest of our day will be filled with the most renown and beautiful sites -- ending with a relaxed open-air dinner.
Day 16 - Siem Reap and environs
This morning you will cruise by a floating village where an entire population lives on boats and moves about following the moody currents of Tonle Sap Lake --- the largest lake in Southeast Asia. After lunch we will hit the road to visit lesser-known known temples and secret places.
Day 17 - Fly from Siem Reap to Bangkok
We will arrive in Bangkok by noon today so that you can join a flight home or, if you choose, you can spend a little more time in Thailand on an M&G extension. Contact Us for more information about staying longer.
